 2011 GTYC Spring Regatta

2011_gtyc_spring_race1

Story Submitted by Tom Babel
The GTYC Spring Laser Regatta was held on West Grand Traverse Bay on May 14, 2011. Nine skippers were greeted with cold air/water temps, 12-18 Northerly wind and a driving rain. Perfect spring Laser Racing conditions in Traverse City.

Jordon Owen (RC/PRO) scheduled a 5 race/no throw out series. Ultimately, four races were sailed as the series was cut short due to thermal issues. A dry suit was the order of the day. The four legged, relatively short courses lead to some very close racing. First at the weather mark was often decided by the right of way vessel.

Than Dykstra (GTYC) was very consistent, sailed strong in all four races and had no big mistakes. He posted finishes of 2,1,1,1 to win the series. Than is a past GTYC Fleet Champion and demonstrated that form to convincingly win this regatta.

It was a tight race for second place. Jamie Stuursma and Patrick Gerber tied on 13 points. Jamie won the tie-breaker with a 1st in race one leaving Patrick with the bronze for the day. Both skippers sailed hard in the northerly breeze and waves. Jamie came back from an OCS in race two, and later a collision with Pete Comfort, to show a true test of survival.

Four Jr Sailors Participated. Pete Kirby-Miller was the top Jr in sixth place over-all. Elle Rivard was the top female in 7th. Fourteen year old Colton Gerber sailed very well all day, with no hat and no capsizes. Nicely done Colton.

Racers were treated to some warm chili dogs from WARES FROSTY TREAT at the completion of racing.

Special thanks to Jim Sorbie and crew of the safety boat.

Results:
  1. T. Dykstra           5 points
  2. J. Stuursma       13
  3. P, Gerber           13
  4. G. Stauber         16
  5. P. Comfort         19

2011 LASER & LASER RADIAL

GULL LAKE OPEN

GULL LAKE MICHIGAN

Notice of Race

Saturday May 28, 2011

Another Grey threatening day greeted 14 Lasers on May 28 on Gull Lake- but that would not deter a great afternoon of tight racing!  5 races were held and the rain held off until the boats were in the drysail lot (and the bride on the beach at the YC was married!) While several boats took there turn at the top the series came down to the last race between Chad Coberly and JP Del Solar with JP hunting Chad down on the starting line like it was the Americas Cup to take the win and put the required boats in between to take the series! A few boats went swimming and one boat nearly sank.. I wont mention whom.. in the erratic 5-15 knot breeze. The event was wrapped up with a mini clinic by JP describing his boat set up and his technique-Thanks JP!  Hopefully next year will bring better weather and we can get more folks going in the Spring! Full results below. -- Chad

2010 GTYC LASER FALL REGATTA
and Babel Cup

hosted by — GRAND TRAVERSE YACHT CLUB (GTYC)

sanctioned by — TRAVERSE CITY LASER FLEET

Saturday, September 18, 2010 — Traverse City, Michigan

The 2010 LASER Fall Regatta was held on Saturday September 18, at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club. A total of nineteen boats sailed in this, the second leg of the Babel Cup. Racers were treated to a variety of conditions. PRO Eric Lind started the first race in a shifty 12-15 kt Northwest breeze which would eventually die by race #5.

Ken Swetka (Crescent Sail Yacht Club) came out firing on all cylinders and basically put on a Laser Clinic for the fleet. Most impressive was his down wind tactics and speed. Congrats to Ken on some great sailing and the overall victory with 8 pts. Mark Lyons (GTYC) and Tom Babel (GTYC) were 2nd and 3rd with 15 and 18 pts respectively.

Top junior was Pete Kirby-Miller (Glen Lake) in 8th place overall with Abigale Skibowski (TACS/GTYC) the top female in 9th.

The 2010 BABEL CUP was also decided by total accumulation of points for the spring and fall regattas.

PETE COMFORT (TACS/Torch Lake) took the cup by winning the spring regatta with 12 pts, added to 22 pts in the fall, for a total of 34 pts. Jamie Stuursma was a close second with a total of 36 points.

Special thanks to PRO Eric Lind, Mark Boat Bob Clark and crash boat Jim Sorbie. At the conclusion of sailing, the fleet was treated to refreshments and Hot Dogs from WARES FROSTY TREAT.

Lansing Sailing Club - 2010 District 19 Laser Regatta

August 28, 2010 Warm temperatures, clear skies and a favorable southerly wind provided the perfect playground for 37 Laser sailors from three different states who participated in the 2010 Lansing Sailing Club District 19 Laser Regatta.

With winds blowing from the south the race committee was able to set an Olympic course with a windward leg approximately three quarters of a mile long. Tom LaBelle from Rochester Hills, a two time winner of the LSC Laser Regatta got off to a great start again this year winning the first race of the day. He went on to win two more races earning him the top spot of the regatta and his third LSC Laser Regatta title. Fresh off of his second at the US Nationals and first place finish at CORK, EJ O’Mara from Burton, MI, posted high finishes throughout the day to keep pressure on LaBelle and finish 2nd for the day. Doug Carlson from Okemos, MI and a LSC member rounded out the top three in 3rd place.

August 11-14 West Michigan Yachting Association Championship Regatta at Spring Lake Yacht Club

Here is a write-up from Bruce Hansen:

There was a fairly low turn out in the Laser fleet, 18 boats. That was expected. Still had great racing though. Charlie Knapp won all 5 races while the rest of fleet battled for the remaining podium. In 2nd place with 31 points was Dell Todd. In third and the top woman in the fleet was Amy Bourne with 33 points. The top Junior also with 33 points was Isaac Kremers. Full results can be found here: http://www.wmya.org/race_info/2010/laser_results.html

Thursday, August 5, 2010

A dozen sailors participated in an afternoon of lessons and drills in Laser boat setup and handling put on by Laser Master Dick Tillman.

Solid wind greeted the sailors, with average winds around 14 knots and puffs jumping as high as 20 knots. Many boats spent a part of their afternoon bottom

side up, but a great time was had by all!

After a short break, ten laser sailors headed back out for some racing. Even with a 5:30 start, the wind held above 12 knots, so there was plenty of speed and wipe outs.

True to his championship history, Dick won the day, but he was pressed hard (everyone wants to take a swing at the champ!).

2010 Laser Masters Great Lakes Championships

Hosted by Sarnia Yacht Club

There 4 races on Saturday with winds from 5 to 12 knots.  The weather mark ended up quite close to the beach which made for some challenging tactical situations.  Each start had the current (a bit over 1 kt) pushing everyone over so if you look in the Full Results links you will find some OCS scores.  On Sunday we were greated by fog and no wind so we waited ashore for an hour before getting towed out. Some nice wind filled in and we started a race but part way through it got weird so it was abandoned.  The wind shifted about 90 degrees, settled, and off we went again.  The wind stayed fairly steady throughout this race at about 5-6 kts.  The wind and current were almost the same direction which made for a very long beat and fairly quick run.  The race comittee tried to get another race off.  We started and about 20 minutes later only made it 1/2 way up the beat.  They were also monitoring weather and some nasty front was approaching so they thought it best to ttow us in.  We got heavy rain while putting away the boats but nothing too bad.  Later that day we heard about a tornado just to the Northwest in Michigan.

All in all from RC to food to billeting the Sarnia group did a great job!

Below is the report from EJ O’Mara on his regatta this Spring.  We also already had the O’Day qualifier at Crescent which, unfortunately, had very light attendance.  I think making the commitment to go to the finals (Florida) keeps people away from the qualifier.

Gull Lake Yacht Club (www.glyc.org) is the venue for this year’s D19 Championship.  Gull Lake is a beautiful crystal clear, deep water lake 4 x 1 miles in size.  The facility includes a beach with life guards, showers, snack bar, full service bar & food facilities- great for families!  The Notice Of Regatta is posted at www.d19laser.org.

Lake Fenton Laser Regatta - EJ O'Mara Sailing Fundraiser

May 15, 2010 was the date for the Lake Fenton Laser Regatta- EJ O'Mara Sailing Fundraiser.  It was a beautiful day for the event with sunny skies and a 7-10 knot North Easterly. As sailors were arriving breakfast was set out and everyone got to enjoy a wonderful and hearty breakfast compliments of Mary O'Mara (mother).  At 10:30 AM the competitors launched and three solid races ensued.  Lunch was served on the water and with that extra time we were able to get three more races off thanks to the excellent work of the head race committee Dave Nickels.  At the end of the day awards were handed out to top three finishers and top junior.  After excluding myself from the results the finishes were, 1st Peter Johanson 2nd Urs Geiger T3rd Ariel O'Mara T3rd Mary Vorel and Top Junior Timothy Nickels.  They all got an awesome picture (compliments of Ariel O'Mara) in a nice wooden frame (compliments of Joe Abbott).

I think the best thing about the whole event was the support I received from Lake Fenton Sail Club and its members, my family, and all the friends that volunteered to help or just came out to support me.  I would like to give a special Thanks to the immediate O'Mara family, the Beckman family, the Oslund family, and Dave Nickels for which without them none of this would have been possible.

If you would like to still participate in this ongoing fundraiser but were not able to make it out to the actual regatta please contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. 2010 LASER & LASER RADIAL

DISTRICT 19 CHAMPIONSHIP

GULL LAKE, MICHIGAN

Results and Photos

Gull Lake Yacht Club did a great job hosting this years District.  Chad Coberly and his wife Michelle did a lot of work getting it all organized.  Michelle did registration and was able to get over a dozen new Lasere Class members signed up!  Way to go!!

The club facilities are very, very nice.  They even have towels in the shower!  It is also a golf and country club but luckily they were able to tolerate us for a couple daysInnocent.

Satrurday started out looking promising as we were rigging but then as we sailed out it got quite a bit lighter.  We waited about 1/2 hour for the wind to settle enough before the RC got things going.  Gull Lake had some interesting winds that sailors such as myself could never really figure out. If you look at the results you'll see some guys had it figured out pretty good.  We got 4 races, as planned, sailed and were in by about 5pm.

Sunday did not look as promising and we all drifted to the starting area and waited about an hour for some wind.  It was again difficult to figure out what side would pay.  It seemed most of Saturday was "go left" but on Sunday it was hit and miss.

Chad ended up wining the tie breaker over Matt Woodworth for the overall win.  After Master's scoring Chad also was top Master.  He ran the regatta and won!  Way to go!

As sailors were arriving breakfast was set out and everyone got to enjoy a wonderful and hearty breakfast compliments of Mary O'Mara(mother).  At 10:30 the competitors launched and three solid races ensued.  Lunch was served on the water and with that extra time we were able to get three more races off thanks to the excellent work of the head race comittee Dave Nickels.  At the end of the day awards were handed out to top three finishers and top junior.  After excluding myself from the results the finishes were, 1st Peter Johanson 2nd Urs Geiger T3rd Ariel O'Mara T3rd Mary Vorel and Top Junoir Timothy Nickels.  They all got an awesome picture (compliments of Ariel O'Mara) in a nice wooden frame (compliments of Joe Abbott).

I think the best thing about the whole event was the support I recieved from Lake Fenton Sail Club and its members, my family, and all the friends that volunteered to help or just came out to support me.

EJ O'Mara

May 15, 2010 will be the date for this early season Laser regatta at Lake Fenton Sailing Club.  It is being held as a regular regatta but also as a fundraiser for EJ O'Mara's sailing and training this year as I work my way towards the goal of sailing in the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. I plan on attending 9 big events this year along with four clinics.  My expenses for 2010 will total a minimum of $10,000 including travel, lodging, event fees, sails, equipment, and coaching.  Avon Sailboats has already lent their support in a major way for which I am very thankful.

This event is being hosted through the LFSC sailing school which is a non-profit organization, which means all expenses, registration and donations are tax deductible.  So come out to Lake Fenton on May 15 for what is sure to be a great regatta! If you know you would like to come please let me know (click here to contact EJ)! Click Here for Notice Of Regatta.

Nov 27 Black Friday Regatta - Mid-Michigan Laser Fleet

Dear Laser Sailors,
I am selling my season old (raced roughly 5 times) Laser XD.   XD is the ultral high end Laser Performance equipment package that costs over $6,100 new ($6400 for 2010).  I also added Harken carbon micro mainsheet cleats on both sides and an inspection port on the starboard side of the mainsheet block that holds an ultra large storage bag.  I do this on all my boats an love it.  Great for water, food, gloves and can even fit a spray top easily.  My boat comes (part of the XD package) with the Hyde sail (Laser Europe) and I only used the sail at 2 events (2 racing days, or 9 races).  All the top laser sailors use the hyde sail as it is slightly smoother and lasts longer.  The Hyde sail comes from the factory per the XD Laser Package with a rolling system to store it perfectly flat, no wrinkles or creases and was never folded.
The hull (all stark white), foils (I always use my edge protectors), spars (stored in a padded spar bag) and running rigging is all in excellent condition.  The final key feature of the XD package also the XD tiller and tiller extension which run $400+ if purchased separately.  They are awesome.  I will never sail with another tiller/tiller extension combination.  Its incredibly stiff, easy to cleat the rudder and ridiculously light.
If you are interested or know someone who is interested let me know ASAP.  I already have buyer in Annapolis but do not want to deal with the hassle of arranging to have him pick it up...im planning on holding out for the weekend so see if someone more local wants the boat.
I am selling the boat for 5k.  Contact info below.
Thanks,
248 464 0240

Click the Read More link to see a photo of the winners!

Thanks to all who attended the 3rd Annual Frosty Mug Race last Saturday. For those who couldn't attend, we hope to see you next year.

Although conditions were light to variable, the forecasted rain held off and after a short postponement we were able to complete four races. After racing we gathered for brats, dogs, corn on the cob and frosty refreshments. Frosty Mug Awards were presented to the top three finishers and we set the date for the 4th Annual event, October 2, 2010.

Grand Traverse Yacht Club is hosting it's Fall Laser Regatta on Saturday September 19.  Come enjoy some fun on and off the water. NOR is at  http://www.gtyc.org/documents/Race/2009%20race/2009%20GTYC%20LASER%20Fall%20%20INVITATIONAL%20REGATTA.pdf

Below is the skinny on buying an event boat. Rick Rothenbuhler of DieballSailing has offered to coordinate purchases.  Send Rick a note if you are interested.  You can work with any dealer you want.

Original email from Gordon Capaccio:

Hi District 19,

I wanted to make you aware of a tremendous opportunity to add boats to your District 19 fleets. As you probably already know this year the Laser World Championships and Masters World Championships will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. LaserPerformance will be providing 180 boats to the event for the competitors. These boats will be available for sale through our dealer network after the event at aggressive pricing. This will create a golden opportunity for your District 19 Laser sailors to get an event boat at an aggressive price. The boats will be shipping from Halifax to dealers on September 5th. These boats represent a great opportunity for Laser Sailors to upgrade their old boat or get into their local fleet at a great price. All of these boats include a Seitech dolly.

Let me know how I can help you get the word out about this opportunity to get aggressively priced Lasers. Please let me know if you need any more information. Best regards, Gordon

Details on pricing:

MSRP will be $4959. The boats will be used for both the Laser Worlds and the Master's Worlds. The sail and blades will only be used for the Laser Worlds as the Master's event is hull and spar charter only. All boats come with a Seitech dolly. In addition we have a Laser Worlds program so everyone who buys and takes delivery of a boat between now and December 31. 2009 gets a choice of either a Hyde full/radial sail or hull and deck cover. If you purchase and take delivery prior to October 31, 2009 we will give you a blade bag as well. So here is how it breaks down, assuming you buy before 10/31/2009.

Option A:

Laser Race MSRP= $5480

Seitech Dolly MSRP= $425

Hyde full (or Radial) sail- MSRP= $650

Blade Bag MSRP= $120

Total package Value/MSRP= $6675 (savings of $1716 or 26%)

Or Option B:

Laser Race MSRP= $5480

Seitech Dolly MSRP= $425

Hull cover & deck cover MSRP= $241+$236= $477

Blade Bag= $120

Total package Value/MSRP= $6502 (savings of $1543 or 24%)

These prices do not include freight, taxes registration etc. Let me know if you have any questions. The prices I have quoted you are the suggested retail for each item. If you have a great relationship with your local dealer you may be able to do a bit better depending on volume.

Best regards, Gordon

Lansing Sailing Club District 19 Laser Regatta

August 22, 2009
.  Another great day at the Lansing Sailing Club was enjoyed by all that participated in the 2009 LSC Laser Regatta.  While the weather and wind conditions changed throughout the day, feedback from the 23 Laser Sailors that participated from both sides of the State proved this to be one of the best LSC regattas ever.

This years fleet included two previous LSC Laser Regatta winners, Tom LaBelle from Rochester Hills (2001 & 2004) and Sean Fidler, from
Royal Oak (2005).  While the racing was close and competitive throughout the entire fleet this was especially the case among Tom and Sean.  So close that the two sailors were tied with six points apiece as the final race began. - each having two firsts and two seconds and throwing out their worst result.  The winner of the final race and regatta came down a tacking duel between the last mark and the finish line which was won by Sean Fidler giving him his second LSC Laser Regatta win.

Lake
Lansing’s Doug Carlson sailed consistently all day registering all 3rd place finishes except for his throw-out and ended up 3rd for the regatta.  This year there was also a woman’s class consisting of four competitors.  Mary Vorel from Grand Rapids finished 5th in the regatta to top this woman’s group.  Mary was also the only competitor other than LaBelle or Fidler to get a 1st place finish.  Prior to Saturday’s racing there was a special ceremony for LSC’s Ron Marshall and his brand new Laser christening her the “Jane M” before she was put in the water for the very first time.
As usual Macatawa Bay Yacht Club and regatta organizer JP did a great job with the food and everything else it takes.  The wind was pretty challenging for the race committee but they managed to get 2 races in on Saturday and 3 on Sunday.  Sunday we had to be towed out to Lake Michigan and the towed back into Lake Macatawa since there was no wind out on the Big Lake.  It made for some tight racing on the shorter courses.  There were 33 full rigs and 14 radials!   The Full rig champion was Kevin Shockey and the Radial champ was Sam Padnos.  It was great to see the wide range of ages sailing the event.  JP organized a lot of great raffle tickets and goodies to go with the trophy winners.  Yours truly got a Laser Performance hat and Zhik hot top!  Cool!  Uhmm…I mean Warm (it will come in handy in Nova Scotia!).  Full results are at http://web.me.com/jpdelsolarg/Laser/Result_GL.html

The Crescent Sail Yacht Club fleet will be sailing on Friday evenings.  Come join us for some casual racing.  Contact Ken for more info.

Thank you for those who attended Saturday's Grand Traverse Yacht Club's Spring Laser Regatta. We were pleased to have 14 boats participate in the first half of the Babel Cup series.  Attached please find a complete list of results.

Other events at GTYC this year include the Laser Districts on August 8-9 and the second half of the Babel Cup, the Fall Regatta, on September 19.

As always we welcome any feedback you may have and hope to see you at future events.

Sincerely,

GTYC Laser Fleet

D19 has passed the Secretary Torch from Sean Fidler to me, Ken Swetka.  Sean will help as needed and we thank him for all his efforts in keeping D19 going.  I sail out of Crescent Sail Yact Club, www.crescentsail.com, just North of Detroit (no mayor jokes please...).  I also get a chance to do one or two major regattas per year and have been doing some Masters events.  The big one for me this year will be the Masters Worlds in Nova Scotia.  At least a few D19 Lasers will be going.

Recently I have been working with Tracy Usher to integrate events from www.laser.org to www.d19laser.org.  Both sites use the same Content Management backend.  It has been very educational for me and hopefuly not to tedious for the teacher...Tracy (he REALLY knows this stuff!!).

Last year we had success with D19 sailors posting their own regatta notices and results on the site.  Anyone can sign up and get authorized to write articles and then be allowed to modify them.  This allows each fleet captain to go and update their own articles.  This really helps keep the site fresh when so many people are addding info throughout the year.  We look forward to more people singing up and helping to keep other D19 sailors informed.

There is also a post by email Blog function on D19Laser.org.  This allows one to easily post to a blog for regatta reports.  This past winter I did one for the Midwinter events.  As I was getting ready to sail in the morning or winding down in the evening I could send an email from my phone and it would post to the site.  If you have a camera phone pictures can be posted too.

Like all classes it would be nice to see some grass roots fleet building.  I think in these economic times the Laser is an easy sell.  From fleet sailing to regattas it just makes sense.  Where else can you get high level and just plain fun sailing for so little cost?  In just a short drive you can go and meet some great people at different regatta venues....stay overnight in a tent...a couple days of fun sailing...and then home in time for dinner on Sunday.

Here's a brief list of events in D19.  More info can be found at www.d19laser.org.

May 9-10  Think Spring Regatta - Crescent Sail Yacht Club
June 13   Spring Regatta - Michigan Sailing Club
June 13-14   Great Lakes Championship - Macatawa Bay Yacht Club

September 26  No Sweat - Portage Yacht Club
October 4  Fall Regatta - Michigan Sailing Club

Please read the below announcement from our past D19 Secretary Sean Fidler.  Big Thanks to Sean for all his work in keeping District 19 going!!!

Any organization takes a lot of work to run.  My hope in taking this on is that each of you, especially you "fleet captains" / local organizers, will share some of the load.  For example last year many of you posted regatta notices on the website.  I would ask that you do this again and more of you do the same.  Also update info on your local fleet and add content to keep the site fresh.  Use it as a tool to build your local sailing as well as regatta notices.  So go to www.d19laser.org and sign up!  Create some articles.  Those more adventurous can be given more authority on the site to add/change in more areas.  Let me know if your interested.

The Grand Rapids Yacht Club and its Laser Fleet invite you to:

One of our local sailors snuck off to Atlanta in the first weekend of March and won the D17 Grand Prix regatta. I am happy for him but a little peeved he did not invite me! No way I could go but that is not the point! Congrats to Rick Rothenbuhler for winning in the 29 boat fleet at Lake Lanier (www.laser.org or www.llsc.com for results).
